Surfers Against Sewage Beach Clean

Surfers Against Sewage Beach Clean

What an amazing weekend. I hope you were treated to the same kind of amazing weather we had in South Wales. With glorious sunshine it felt like summer arrived early this weekend, and it was the perfect time to get down to the beach.

Joining members of Surfers Against Sewage and the local surf clubs, we headed to Porthcawl's Coney beach on Sunday to take part in the SAS Big Spring Beach Clean 2012. As a regular surfer, I often come into contact with the rubbish that ends up on the beaches I visit and this was a great opportunity for me and the family to spend our time making our environment a little nicer.

With more than twenty other volunteers and kitted out with gloves and bright orange refuse bags we spent two hours scouring the beach for any and all litter we could find. It really is surprising what some people will throw away. In amongst the obvious and occasionally revolting, we also found the unusual - including a black bin bag full of grass cuttings and a pink furry hat!

It was great to see so many people willing to sacrifice their Sunday mornings to do their bit for improving our local beaches, and I found it to be a truly rewarding experience.
