Kane Foods' New Building

30 August 2011 by David Stockford

For most people, working in sustainability is a passion but when your passion is your job, it doesn’t take long before it becomes part of the daily grind. That’s why it’s so good when you stumble across genuinely interesting sustainability initiatives. We review hundreds of sustainability strategies a week in the office but the work of Kanes Foods has really caught our eye.

Their new building includes the latest sustainable technology in order to minimise the impact on the environment. Their curved roof is covered in grass to allow the growth of indigenous wild flowers while allowing the facility to blend into the surrounding Cotswolds hills. The Hempcrete walls are made from renewable and sustainable sources and reverse the damaging effect of greenhouse gases while achieving excellent thermal controls Solar panels are in operation and rainwater is harvested in all amenity areas.

In 2006 Kanes set themselves the challenge of eliminating paperwork and transforming their quality control procedure. Kanes implemented the use of mobile computing devices that allow customers, suppliers and management real time visibility of all tasks’ and processes performed in the factory. It really is great to see UK businesses taking the lead in sustainable operations!
